A guitarist, he is a member of the astronaut band Max Q, a Houston-based rock band whose members are all NASA Astronauts.He was raised and educated in Lake Orion, Michigan.His education included an Associate Science degree from Oakland Community College, Michigan, where he graduated Cum Laude; a B.S. in Solid Earth Sciences from Purdue University, where he met his wife Indira during their freshman year; an M.S. in Geophysics, Purdue University; and a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences specializing in Seismology, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, 1995.Feustel was selected as a Mission Specialist by NASA in July 2000. Following the completion of two years of training and evaluation, he was assigned technical duties in the Astronaut Office Space Shuttle and Space Station Branches.Dr. Feustel served on the crew of STS-125, the final Space Shuttle mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. The mission successfully extended and improved the observatory's capabilities through 2014. In completing his first space mission, Feustel logged almost 13 days in space, and a total of 20 hours and 58 minutes in 3 EVAs (extra-vehicular activities).Feustel was next assigned to the crew of STS-134 to the International Space Station, its mission to deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a state-of-the-art cosmic ray particle physics detector designed to examine fundamental issues about matter and the origin and structure of the universe.
